After the overnight train ride I met Miranda when she picked me up from the station. She told me she and Toni had split up, and he had the farm. She left me with him and his charred pita breakfast. Later when the bees fled Toni's farm and swarmed at Miranda's, he went to fetch the queen so the others would come home. He wasn't wearing any gear, just his shorts, and he pretended not to get stung.

When I was five or six, thousands of bees swarmed the black walnut tree in our backyard. My dad videotaped them through the window glass. He labelled the tape 'Wildlife.'

For those five months I saw the moon every night. I always knew what to expect, full or empty, growing or not. I saw the moon again last night, the only thing brighter than the Chicago skyline. I couldn't have guessed it would be a thin crescent.

I feel guilty about going to the farmer's market in the city. They're exotic here, and romantic. Like you're a snob if you go to the farmer's market.
